What a Sound System Actually Weighs

An argument about infrastructure told in kilograms

A mid-scale baile rig in São Paulo — the kind that fills a concrete rooftop or a mid-capacity indoor space — runs to somewhere between 600 and 900 kilograms of gear before you count the people carrying it. That number is not dramatic until you try to move it.

Break it down: a pair of front-of-house subwoofer cabinets, loaded with 18-inch drivers, will land at roughly 80 to 100 kilograms each. Add mid-tops, fold-back monitors, and side fills and you are approaching 400 kilograms in speaker cabinets alone. The amplifier racks — typically two or three road cases housing the plate amps or separate power stages — contribute another 80 to 150 kilograms depending on channel count. Cabling, connectors, rigging hardware, crossovers and signal processors fill in the remaining mass.

Now get that through a building. São Paulo venues that were not designed as venues — the converted warehouse, the rooftop that became a floor, the ground-floor commercial unit — have service lifts rated for perhaps 300 kilograms, or no lift at all. Stairs become a structural negotiation. Load-in time, usually invisible in any budget conversation, can swallow three to four hours before a single cable is plugged in.

The economics bite here. The crew required to carry, rig and de-rig safely is not optional — it is load-bearing in both senses. Smaller promoters absorb this as a fixed cost regardless of attendance. When the night is thin, the rig still weighs the same.

What this means in practice is that the rig does not simply go where the music goes. The music goes where the rig can physically reach. That constraint shapes which venues survive as regular venues, which communities have consistent access to serious sound, and ultimately which scenes develop depth. Weight is not a technical detail. It is a political one.
